Free Race Wednesdays (in October)

No joke, Wednesdays in October, you can race your CX bike for nothin', with people just like you.

THIS week, this is going on at a place we're starting to know pretty well - the same Cliff Drive area where we did Cliff Drive CX just last weekend (3218 Gladstone Blvd, KC, MO).

Start time is at 6 p.m. Racing follows each Wednesday until November at a different KC location (at which point Wednesday night racing will probably still continue in some form, involving better lights than you'll need to bring the second or third week).
A&E Television pic, from The Beast

History tells me this will involve 2 or so 20 minute races, so how doesn't this fit into your weekly race prep?

The more, the merrier ...

Need more details? Check the Swayze Memorial Facebook page. And understand, this is not just free racing for you, this is also for that guy over there.

More fun at Cliff Drive

Another Chamber of Commerce day, or still a little too summery for 'cross.

But still, lots stood out at this new place for Dan, Britton, and the Colavita crew to put on a race or two.

Keep an eye on KSHB, they were there again today, shooting when the Women Masters classes took off.

KCA for the results.

Roger shot a ton.

I saw some stuff:

Moseley took 40+ again, from the front of the early a.m. Masters contest.
Darrel Williams, down from Savannah/St. Jo with a few more from the Team Horizon crew, was aboard a bike (frame) he built with his own two hands (for his wife, actually).
Check out more of Williams' handiwork at the usual social network stuff under "Thrive Cycles," and don't forget the race Team Horizon has on the calendar Oct. 12.
Fatbikes can't even fit in the photo frame.
John Vansooy was one of a few who doubled up both days, which wasn't an easy task.

Scorching start in Mens Open, with Brandon Melott (Team Spokepony - Warr Acres, OK) taking the holeshot (he sat out SS today though, after winning that, and Open, Saturday).

But Garret (G-Wiz) Steinmetz (Ethos Racing - Kansas City, MO) wound up his mountain bike and eventually got around Melott for the win today.
Britton Kusiak (Colavita/Parisi - Prairie Village, KS), tried to get away in single speed, but finished second to Wesley Boyce (Cycle City Racing - Shawnee, KS), shown here trailing.

Let's do the Cliff Drive again!

Same time, same place Sunday, yeah?

If you missed Saturday, what did you miss? A course POSSIBLY hillier than the Manions of seasons past. Maybe a bit too hot/sunny, too, but then again, this is still quite early in the season. What you gonna' do?

Roger was shooting, and I think he also managed to get KSHB-41 to show up for a while. Check the 10 p.m. news, if you didn't catch anything on the earlier broadcast today.

KCA has results.

And meanwhile, across the sea, Nys rights the ship: cyclingfans

I saw some stuff of mention at Cliff Drive One:

Rick Moseley (360 Racing - Shawnee, KS) tore up the Masters field early.

The Juniors and Masters Women field made up a pretty fun race or two.

Cool bike.

Backlighted, I don't know how to use this phone camera again, and 8Lumens corrupting the background. This video has it all.

Your Saturday (and Sunday)

Cliff Drive! (Cross)

Get there. Stuff for all. Bring your CX bike while you're at it, that's going on, too. "K-Bar" and all that. Some fast 29ers on the cyclocross course, I'm betting.

BRING a mountain bike if you've got one. Bring one, bring all.

Check cyclingfans in the a.m. if you've got time, Neerpelt means it's getting real.

Yeah, none of this any more.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.

This week in KC Cross

Big deal on The Facebook about same-day race fee hikes (look for the Kansas Cycling Association page/s or whatever it is you call it on Facebook). Seems we've heard this in years past, but I can't put my finger on it.

I'm just waiting for a similar uproar about our now-condensed season. "K-Bar" wraps up by Nov. 9, and KS State is day two at Joules, Oct. 19. I don't have a dog in this fight since I don't put on races, but really? I guess since the scene is dying, it makes sense to have it last about a month.

This week, you can look forward to another clinic night at Joules, and a two-day "K-Bar" affair at (where a ton of bike-related stuff is actually going on ... )
Cliff Drive Cross. (See right.)

Other stuff this weekend that might be of interest:

Night MTB race Saturday, Urban Dirty. Pretty sure related to "ton of bike-related stuff" noted above. Send me socks for the plug, would 'ya?

Saturday MTB race in Warsaw, MO, too, but I think those people know about that kind of stuff already.

(MULLETS BAR) CX RACES IN DES MOINES Saturday night AND SUNDAY - thanks, John. In Des Moines. Iowa. (Okay, "Oakley, Iowa") Not a weeknight, which I thought was pretty lame until they took a weekend. Argh.

CX clinic with KC people, in Austin? What? Yeah. But that's enough about that.

GP Neerpelt kicks off the Euro season for real. Klaus took the Belgian opener the other day, but we'll see about that:

Buffalo Bill in the can

Roger has the photos, and KCA the results at the first one of the season.

This weekend it's Cliff Drive by the same crew that's given us Manions. (USA Cycling flyer if you're anti-Facebook.)

T-Minus four days to race day one

It's been a while since we've raced at Haven Memorial Park in Leavenworth, but the first cyclocross race of the KC-area 2014 (-15?) season brings most there this coming Sunday.
Hot laps at Donderdag, last night in OP. Way too cool!

And bring the Big Boy pants along, because this is isn't just Race One, this is RACE ONE of the "k-bar" competition, or the closest thing in these parts to SuperPrestige or Trofee or whatever.

Unless memory has completely failed me (some say it has, so there you go), the course here is a narrow-ish track on either side of the road, with a fairly significant hill playing a role. Pretty rough ground last time there, too, but our new Seattle-like weather might soften things up some.

Lots of getting ready going on, I've noticed. Nationals will be here before you know it. Stole a bit from the current TX buzz below.

Here we go!

Madge says: You're soaking in it now

Everywhere you looked this past week, there was cyclocross.
Leawood Park Singletrack. Cyclocross bikes.

Cross Vegas was Wednesday. Way-cool for us to see online late into the night, even though it was just standard Sven go-time halfway through the last lap to a proper Belgian win. Lots of good/bad there, but, any press is good.

Boulder had two big days of racing, but I didn't see any KC-area names.

Several raced in Hermann, MO, results are surfacing.

Alyssa S called out promoters.

KCA trumpeted their awesome calendar. I don't make these dates up, I get most of them there. It's a lot easier now.

Two more practices, but really, it's race time

Tonight and next Thursday, if you're in or can get to Lawrence, you can still get your practice on. (And scope out the Joules venue, while you're at it.)

Otherwise, let some air out of those tires, because it's race time.

Hermann, MO, this weekend if you want the miles.

Leavenworth, KS, next Sunday, which is a little bit closer.

Then Cliff Drive the next weekend (Sept. 27-28), which is taking the place of Manions this year. You know that's going to be a good one, though.

And then speaking of October ... plan on Wednesdays at Roanoke Park for Swayze Memorial racing/race-like nights. Details at the regular place.

What happens in Vegas ... is CROSS VEGAS (live tonight)

This link should do it: Cross Vegas 2014

Live coverage beginning at 9:45 p.m. CST. Grab a cup of coffee, it's going to be a late one.

It's here!

The season has begun, don't ya' know?

Some big-ish names have already scrounged up enough pennies to race at a UCI event (China, maybe Zach spoke of it), and Lars will be leading the first lap at Cross Vegas tomorrow eve until Sven decides to go.

And around these parts, the Womens-Only clinic is Wednesday night at Shawnee (Herman Laird
Park at 6 p.m.)

Then, as they say it's In like Flynn - racing this weekend at Hermann, Mo., (yo' Dale!), and NEXT Sunday here (Leavenworth, KS), at Buffalo Bill CX - KBAR points for the taking.

'Cross is dead, long live 'cross!

Uh, sure

Right when I thought had Google/the NSA fooled, I get the following from YouTube:

Um, okay? Superprestige, I admit to. But really, my diesel has just four wheels, and my involvement in cabovers maybe extends as far as the 45 rpm record* from Chip Davis' earlier band, that I had, oh, quite some time ago.

* Ask some of the Masters category riders.

Hold on, that buzzing in my head reminds me, this is what they WANT me to think. Never mind.

Back on topic, I hope you've been, or are at one of this week's clinics? And/or, planning on taking Adam Mills up this weekend's meet/greet (Saturday night at Trek Store Shawnee), and high octane clinic at the Shawnee Civic Center?

Because you know, we're just about there. The season starts off with the Buffalo Bill CX in Leavenworth Sept. 21, and THAT'S the start of "KBAR," or the year-long team and individual points battle.

Review last time around, shall we (team, individual)? And recall that there are one or two new teams this time around, maybe one or two less (?), and one or two riders not certain where they're landing. I bet some of these battles look quite a bit different a few months from now.

Just a second, I need to move this foil around a little bit. There's this squeal that just won't stop ...

Could be worse, I suppose. Could be former World Champion Niels Albert, and forced to retire thanks to a faulty ticker. This is weird.

Or could have crashed like THE Man himself Zdenek Stybar, though it's good to see he'll be back racing this weekend. Just not at Cross Vegas, like we thought a few months back.

This guy will be there, though.

Get to a clinic this week

Lots and lots of clinics now that September is here, and one this week is likely perfect for you.

Tuesday it's Donderdag.

Wednesday, KCOI/Boulevard and have their introductory/beginner clinic at Hermann Laird Park in Shawnee (where we've been known to race late most seasons). Get there at 6 p.m.

Next is practice on the Joule's course in Lawrence, that starts up this Thursday. Get the info at USA Cycling.

Next Sunday, Sept. 7, take advantage of the Source Endurance clinic at the Shawnee Civic Center. Lots of fast guys there, and sessions for both beginners and seasoned racers. Info.
