2012 finito'

CX Out the Old Year, I think it's called that, is all done now, too. Another one-in-a-million weather day for us, or genuine cyclocross weather (our Southern California mimicking streak is over, I guess). Amy and crew rocked. A good day for everyone forging ahead toward bigger things in the coming weeks.

Oh, and slick enough for everyone?

Roger comes through with results AND photos (and you stayed home?)

A whole mess o' Open is what I saw this time:

Grote Prijs 2012 in the books

How many times have we done this race, how many times have we raced at this park? Kansas City cyclocross rolls on, and this race is nearly organic by this point. It. Is. There.

Arguably the most genuine 'cross conditions we've had all season. A few series battles remain tight going into the New Year's Eve finale. It's all good.

One more on the calendar year, same times/place MONDAY!

Results from KCA
Roger was there

Got my sorry butt off the couch long enough to notice:

Lots more ice early as the masters lined up, a lot helped turn dirt to mud as the day went on.

The Women's Open field takes off, with winner Alyssa Severn (My Wife Inc. - Chicago, IL) leading here. Severn took top honors on Boxing Day, too, and will race both Masters 30-34 and Open at Nationals in Madison.

Josh Taylor (Slimenundgrossen - Olathe, KS)

Chris Thomas (Black Sheep Cartel - Kansas City, MO) rolling a new Fuji disc bike.

Diegem goes to Albert

Makes we wish today's or tomorrow's race would go under the lights. Diegem looked fun, Albert took it.

Then Pauwels, then Stybar. Nys quite a bit back, again. Maybe the 'want another beer?" posters got to him.

Highlights, in a way we don't know around these parts.

Sunday X3

As in - Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.

Here: Series60 penultimate at Hermann Laird Park. Not that it's been colder than heck these last few, but we should have a bit nicer weather for this. Hopefully softer ground, too. Would be cool. Points going in.

There: Diegem (BEL).

Nice comeback by Nys

Unreal, this week. And wow, these courses. Just about speechless, but that's probably just this damn virus speaking. Nice ride by Page for fifth. Watch out for Jonathan.

Euro race Friday a.m.

It's the Bpost Bank Trofee - Azencross / Cross des as. Zolder two days ago, Diegem two days from now. Cool.

Are you kidding me? Let this be a lesson, kids. If you're competing in a time-based series, a good way to lose ground is to get mad when you crash and someone throws a cup of beer at you, and you then go off-course and chase the offending person, maybe even wailing on them a bit.

Who am I to judge, though?

Albert wins over Stybar, Nys (beer-wailer) finishes further back than anyone can remember, and Albert takes the Bpost Bank Trofee series overall.

Bam. That.

Boxing Day Cross results

Snow. Cold. Cold. Cold. Some mud (take what you can get any more 'round these parts).

Nice win for Nys at Zolder

CX World Cup Heusden-Zolder

Throwing caution to the wind, Nys rode away from Albert halfway or so through the final lap, when they'd already gapped everyone else by a K or so. I'm pretty sure Nys always gets Albert in a sprint, so is he playing a mind game here?

Third was Stybar, already racing more than he'd suggested a few weeks back. Come on Worlds ...

Mission Farms, get there Wednesday

106th and Mission, the place called Mission Farms if you've never been. It's the first of three races "this week," or from today until next Monday. And also the first of the final three Series60 races. It's Boxing Day Cross.

And it's a place you might end up at twice early next year, too, for the Wintery Mix races (should you decide to do as much of the world does, and race your CX bike well into February).

We got quite a bit of attention last year at this same race, with The Kansas City Star shooting a ton of photos for one or another of their sections.

Happy Holiday, all, too. Sorry no exclamation marks, I realize I've been using way too many of those.

This week!

The three ring circus has come to town!

Wednesday: Boxing Day CX - Series60
Sunday: Grote Prijs - Series60
Monday - a week from today: Cross Off the Old Year - Series60

(See all the flyers at right.)

And THIS (these) times, it's serious. Series titles are on the line, and holidays, weather, travel, family, even sickness might be playing a role. How cool is this?

Points are only current though BEFORE Epic right now, but you might be able to do some math. Forecasts have snow falling the day before Boxing Day right now, and if you know that course, we at least could have expected some traditional CX conditions on the portion parallelling I-435, where the ditch cross is located. Add an inch of so of snow, and who knows?

Watch Namur!

You know the drill: ch 5, ch 6, ch 7, ch 3, and lastly.

Should be on at 8 a.m. KC time.

Pauwels pretty much drove the school bus today, proving again that he's not a slouch in mud. Far out course, as usual here. If you find the whole video, go to 52:20, and check the hill in the background as Albert is climbing. That's one they go down a bit after that, and it's DOWN.

Watch Stybar (and others) in Essen

MSN has today's racing, which should start about 7 a.m. KC time.

Epic. Mud. Stybar back. Stybar wins in a sprint. But no! He smashed Denuwelaere into the barriers, and was moved to fourth. Not sure about fourth, but Euros can be Euros.

Bummer deal, but Denuwelaere was The Man in this race, even though THE Man took on everyone after basically an entire season away, in EPIC conditions, and got them all. Sort of.

Bring those pins!

The elves responsible for the three KC-area races next week (see races listed at right) ask that we all bring our own safety pins for once, since it's pretty obvious that we all have a few hundred in cars, toolboxes, offices, dens by this point.

Huge weekend, just not here

Zdenek Stybar will race in Essen tomorrow, at the GVA-Trofee contest. He's been getting some attention, but the man does have mad skills. After that, look for the former World Champion at the Zolder World Cup on December 26, Loenhout on December 28, Bredene on December 29 and Diegem on December 30.

New Year's Day will see him race in Baal, and Stybar will wrap his season up at the Czech National Championship on January 12.

Stybar says he won't race at Worlds, but I wonder if his showings here might change things? Doubtful, with his road season starting so soon after, but again, with 2012 Worlds in the US likely being the last time THAT will ever happen, who knows?

So yeah, big stuff starts about now:

Saturday: GVA Trofee - GP Rouwmoer - Essen (BEL)
Sunday: UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup #5 - Namur (BEL)

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Boom, there he is!

Multi-world and generally awesome guy Lars Boom thrashed his CX bike around today in anger, but could only muster a 13th place showing in the GP de ster, a C2 race held in Sint-Niklaas.

Stop me if you've heard this before, but Sven Nys won the race, ahead of Niels Albert.

Check out highlights. If nothing else, this was a chance to see Boom in Rabobank gear for probably the last time?

KCA schedules C officials clinic

Tell your friends and relatives:

KCA will host an Introductory C Officials Clinic led by Amy Fear.

This is a GREAT clinic for anyone who wants to become an official (this includes those individuals who come and watch the races) and for racers who just want to know the rules of their sport. Rulebooks will be provided.  Basic instruction in road, track, cyclocross, and mountain bike officiating will be provided.

  • Clinic instruction will take place for about 3 hours.
  • An open book test will follow the clinic presentation.
  • Getting a 70% on this open book test entitles you to obtain a ‘C’ Officials License.  The cost for the license is $35.00.  The annual C license fee renewal is $60.00.

The building is labeled UBC (United Bioscience Corporation). There is parking in the back off of 39th St.

Please RSVP to of your desire to attend as this would help us determine the actual time and location for the clinic.

Lunch will be provided by KCA for all of you who pre-register.

KCA has a very special incentive program for officials to work or volunteer for events. You can earn the cost of the license (5 events) as well as bonus money (> 5 events) depending on the number of events you work or volunteer for. You will receive 1 incentive point for attending the clinic.

Also, there is a cyclocross race on February 10th and if you attend the race to be practice your new found skills,  you will receive 1 incentive point toward your license fee.

You will start off the 2013 racing season with 2 incentive points.

Sign up NOW.

Nothing this week!

The Kansas City season is not over, but it almost looks that way. Look for three races between Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year's Eve (Dec. 31), with two more contests once we get into January and February. Nationals and (Masters) Worlds looming, too. Real Worlds to follow, I hope you've gotten your tickets!

Series 60 is still on; the three holiday week races will wrap up that season.

Over yonder this week, it's a fairly gigantic weekend. Check it:

Saturday: GVA Trofee - GP Rouwmoer - Essen (BEL) - Stybar is on the starting list, so THIS IS THE BIGGEST DAMN RACE OF THE YEAR, RIGHT HERE.

Sunday: UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup #5 - Namur (BEL)

Namur was AWESOME last year in the mud.

There's also a midweek race I'm going to be all giddy about, so there's that.

Any other word on Lost Trail CX?

Steve Tilford had four flats, but rode to second. That's about all I know!

(Shadd Smith won open, Catherine Walberg won women's open - I got that from Tilford's blog.)

Just in case you haven't left for Louisburg yet, you might try one of the following links for Fidea Cyclo-cross Leuven. Nys until further notice, you know.

(Two) Sunday race(s) this weekend

Two relatively new races on the weekend schedule. Locally, the Lost Trail CX at Louisburg Cider Mill debuts. No series implications here, and a chance of rains in the forecast, have at it!

In Belgium, Fidea Cyclo-cross Leuven spends its second year on that circuit (the race traditionally was at Tervuren, so finding clips on YouTube is confusing). This map is from last year, but the course is presumably the same this time around.

Just a one-race C1 weekend in Europe, but things are about to heat up as we move late in December. Lars Boom and Zdenek Stybar are going to be in action again, and the race calendar will get a lot busier.

Speaking of, it seems odd to me that in Portland (Portland!), the final local race of their season is this weekend. Around here, recall, we've got Mark's Week O' Fun late this month, then two more races early in 2013. One is not just after Nationals, there's one after Worlds. Kansas City Cyclocross rocks!

Ride tonight at Swope

From the Swope Trails blog:

Gate entrance will open at 6:30 and close at 6:45. If you come after 6:45...tough luck.

You can ride as long as you'd like as long as you want as long as that means you're done by 8:50p. You can leave anytime, but the exit gate wil be locked at 9pm.

We've been able to work out this deal to allow us to do this ride, don't ruin it for everyone else. If we have problems we will simply no longer do this ride.

Yeah, as long as you follow the above rules, you get to park ON TOP. Swope Park. After dark. Get there!

Lars Boom's crazy staircase

Had a house with a crazy steep staircase once, and I actually raced bikes faster then. I think this might be why guys like Lars Boom win so much. (Tolerate the Lifetime Movies for Women music there at the beginning, it gets better. Much, much better when we get in tune with what Lars is into.)

Sure, we haven't seen Boom on the CX bike much in recent years, but he's on the start list for the GP De Ster, a UCI C2-ranked race taking place December 19 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium.

This week

Right now: Check out your Kansas champions, check out your Missouri champions

Wednesday: Go fast at Shawnee's night practice, a bit before 7

Sunday: Race at the inaugural Lost Trail CX, at the Louisburg Cider Mill

How are things on the West coast?

Anyone know of local results at USGP Bend?

The only thing I can find, and I'm not even positive:

Tom Price - Trek Cyclocross Collective, 1st, 45+ (Day One) (Tom's Twitter says second on day two, I believe, so there's that.)

Vlaamse Druivenveldrit - Nys gets it

Sorry for the spoiler, but you just KNEW Nys would get it after yesterday's pedal  issue. This time, he clearly had lesser tires early, but began roaring after he got backup bike 2, 3, 4, 5 or whatever, and powered away from Albert.

Great course, awesome conditions.

So it went Nys, Albert, Vantornout.

Kansas State 2012, all done

Nice course (to race), maybe not quite so much to watch. Heavy, especially early. Lots of Nebraska there. The KBCXR/KBCXT finale, and state titles handed out in categories and 5-year age increments. Big, big day.

Results from the KCA
Roger was there

Saw some stuff:

I think I had the green tint filter on, on my phone. Big women/junior field lined up.

Steve Schweiker (Ethos Racing - Overland Park, KS), rode to 2nd in 60+.

John Derby (Lawrence, KS) rode away from the Cat 4 field, and I heard he's on GP-Velotek at any second.

Podiums went off under the big top (which must have shifted the green), including this properly armed one.

You know where to go ...

Here! For Fidea Scheldecross Antwerpen. The big guns, etc.(It's gonna' be Nys though, you know that.) Supposed to be on around 8 a.m. our time ...

Pauwels, Nys, Albert. Nys' pedal problems Pt 2, or is it 3? He's his own mechanic, right?

Topeka! For KS State Championships, and the "K-Bar" 1.5x point finale. Big deal!

Friday, December 7, 2012

Championship weekend, plus

Kansas side: State champs Saturday. I've said already it's neck/neck here and there (for K-Bar, anyway). Power will win the day. But who will win the titles? Cool stuff after, too. PAY ATTENTION TO PARKING on-site, there's a swim meet in the area Saturday, too, so let's play nice.

Missouri side: State champs Sunday. Warm-up race at the same place Saturday, if you're not in Topeka for some reason.

Oregon: Trek USGP of Cyclocross Deschutes Brewery Cup (Bend). The finale of the four-race USGP series.

Overseas: Big dogs at Antwerp, BEL, Saturday - (Fidea Scheldecross Antwerpen). Bring on the rain/snow. Come on! (I'm talking about Belgium, but I wonder if this might have a bearing on one of the aboves, too?) Even if it's dry there, you've still got a load of sand along the river, so that's alright, too.

Sunday, most of the same guys will be in Overijse (BEL) for Vlaamse Druivenveldrit, which means whatever you want it to mean. To me, it means old-school track, or rolling man cave. Great potential, in the right weather. Even if nice and dry, it's still a bit removed from 'dirt crit.'

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Go West, young man, for a big weekend, too

You might think the KS and MO state championships are the biggest dang deals going on this weekend. You'd be right!

Still, it's worth mention that this weekend is also the finale of the USGP (of Cyclocross) Series, with the annual stop in the Pacific Northwest (Bend, OR, to be exact, next to the brewery or whatever). I know of at least one KC person who will be riding (and wrenching?) there, and we will be keeping an eye out for others.

Tonight ops

Find some fast wheels at "Old Shawnee Town" a bit before 7 (under tennis court lights), get out to RiverfrontCX if you've got time before sunset, or keep an eye on the Swope Trails blog to see if they're on for another night ride. (They are.)

KS State Preview

Promoter Jeff Unruh put up a preview video of the Kansas State Championships course, and it looks like the standard power track we get when we race in that part of Topeka. Acorns everywhere, too, if history (and my front yard) is any indication.

This being the big finale for the CX version of the Kansas "K-bar" series, it's worth mention that a few champions look certain already - if I'm not mistaken John in Cat 3, Steve in 50+, Doug in 60+, Teresa in 50+, and Britton in SS can't be beaten (in that series) even if they're abducted by aliens some time this week.

A few other divisions are within the bonus-points (1.5x) value of a high finish, and might flip if someone fails to show, drops out, or has a DFL injury/mechanical or something. Another few are too close to call, and will come down to who crosses the line first Saturday. A decisive day awaits on the Kansas side!

Do check your numbers for yourself.

Monday, December 3, 2012

Monday, Monday

It was all I hoped it would be.

We're back to racing! KS State Championships Saturday, MO State Championships Sunday (non-championship race on the same Jefferson City course Saturday if you're looking for a preview). "K-Bar" finale Saturday in Kansas, not sure about Missouri. Regardless, this is it! (Until the Next Big Thing, that is.)

Follow some fast wheels at Herman Laird Park, Shawnee, Wednesday a bit before 7, I'm sure. Get to RiverfrontCX any time. People ride there, you know? (Cool Bailey!)

Watch UCI CX Round #4 from Roubaix, FR

Sporza has it (Men on about 8 a.m., women earlier, try when you can):

Reminds ME of Topeka. You?

Nys, Pauwels, Albert, with Julien Taramarcaz (Swi) BMC Mountainbike Racing Team hanging in there like a champ for fourth. Good race, on what looked like a very fun course. A bit of rain kept it interesting, too, but I can't figure out why Albert had such trouble with the tight downhill corners (compared to the others).

Katie won, too. J-Pow top American guy about 2 minutes back.
